Frequently asked questions about own-hair transplantation

Who performs the operations?
A highly experienced plastic surgeon (and member of the union of German plastic surgeons) carries out all cosmetic surgery in our hospital.

Can my body reject the hair?
Rejections do not usually occur, as we use your own bodily tissue. With careful preparation and implantation, we can guarantee success rates of between 95 and 100%.

When is the best time for hair transplantation?
It is most advantageous to perform the operation at the first signs of hair loss. At this time, the existing hair in the front and upper head areas hide the small transplantational openings.

Will I get a thick head of hair?
Normal hair density cannot be achieved. In the right conditions however, a natural-looking and sufficient hairline can be obtained.

FAQ

Transplantation of one's own hair

Thick hair is a symbol of youth. Youthful charisma and an air of self-confidence make one attractive and open doors. Since the dawn of time, man has attempted to prevent premature hair loss by using such "treatments" as applying animal excrement to the scalp. Nowadays, medication consists mostly of hormone-containing hair tonics. Only a few of these can delay or stop hair loss and even fewer can make the hair grow back again.

When is treatment recommended?

If hair loss is hereditary in your family and you possess enough hair at the back of your head, then a hair transplant is possible. Depending on the extensiveness and location of the bald spot, we can achieve very good results.

If the reason for your hair loss is a conditioned disease due to illness of the internal organs or a medicinal side effect, then you should consult your family doctor or skin physician.

Therapy for hair loss after accidents (burns, dog bites, and mechanical scalp injuries) demands many months of treatment. It is based on tissue expansion with a following transplant of the hair roots. All insurance companies will pay for this treatment.

The operative procedure

Together with you we will determine the position of your new hair border. Transplants should not be performed within the area of the temples. Afterwards, we will inject a local anaesthetic into the area at the back of the head from which we will take the hair. A narrow strip with sufficient hair roots to fill the prepared area is taken out, and the wound closed. Enlarged under a microscope or magnifier, the individual roots will now be separated, resulting in transplants with up to four roots. After locally anaesthetising the receiving area, we will use our new procedure of making the smallest possible opening in the scalp and transplant the roots. One must bear in mind that the transplants in the fringe area should only have one root to ensure a natural appearance.

You will be able to leave the hospital without bandaging after the operation (approx. 4 hours).

The time after the operation

The inserted transplants will remain in a non-growing phase for some weeks to ensure natural hair growth. The results will be noticeable after between 4-6 months.
