Loose and surplus skin in the upper and lower eyelids or above-average accumulations of fat can cause a tired, drawn and sometimes sad facial expression. It is not pleasant and can leave one feeling old, especially when asked by colleagues if he or she has partied through the night. Noticeably over-hanging upper eyelids can restrict the field of vision and lead to a compensatory rising of the eyebrows, which in turn causes forehead wrinkles.

Neither massages, facemasks nor the application of special ointments can effectively influence this condition. Only operative correction is capable of bringing about an improvement or elimination.

The different operational methods
The signs of ageing are more pronounced in some than in others. Likewise, each person sees his or her outward appearance differently. The chosen procedure of eyelid correction, and simultaneous eyebrow lifting, depends on the anatomical condition and desires of the patient.

Surplus skin in the upper and lower eyelids is removed. Because there is frequently an increased build-up of fatty tissue below the eye muscle or the connective tissues, removal or repositioning of these parts is recommended.
The scars, which begin at the side of the eye and follow the “laughter lines” out of the upper and lower eyelids, are invisible in all cases.

If an excess supply of fatty tissue exists in the lower eyelid and a skin removal is not necessary then we can enter through the eye’s membrane. Scarring is not visible.

Chances of success
The correction of the upper and lower eyelids, which can be performed individually or together, leads to a distinctly younger, fresher facial expression. We highly recommend eyebrow lifting during the same procedure. Your friends and acquaintances will comment on your young, fresh appearance, without suspecting that you have had an operation. Many of our patients have noticed a clearly improved self-confidence and sense of well-being in both their private and working lives and found that their problems are not as important as they were.

The operation
After extensive disinfection of the area, we will mark the surplus skin and if necessary, remove the surplus fatty tissue, partially dissect and reposition the muscles and lift the eyebrows

After a successful operation, you will receive a cooling compression to help avoid excessive swelling within the first few hours.

The time after the operation
To ensure all-round post-operative observation, we recommend that all patients spend one night in our hospital, so that we can undertake comprehensive cooling of the closed eyes with damp compression.

In order to avoid excessive post-operative swelling, we recommend that you lay and sleep in a sitting position for a few days.

To enable the swelling and bruising to subside and the wound to recover fully, you will need between 10-14 days. However, you will only see the final results after a period of weeks. After approximately six days, we will remove the stitching at the same time as changing your dressings.

Depending on the opinion of the operating surgeon, you should refrain from intense sporting activities for approximately 6 weeks. Consequences of bending or carrying heavy objects include increased blood pressure or tearing of blood vessels.

For a recovery free from complications, you should abstain from alcohol and nicotine during the first four post-operative weeks.

Surgery-specific risks
Infections and healing disorders, widened scar formations, post-operative haemorrhages and temporary loss of feeling are regarded as special risks of this surgery.
In addition, particularly when tightening the lower eyelid, there is the risk of warping the edge of the eyelid (ectropion) through excess tension.
